San Felipe is described as “A Sleepy Little Drinking Village with a Fishing Problem” by the T-shirts and stickers at Pete’s Camp (a development on the beach before you get into the city of San Felipe). In all seriousness, years ago San Felipe was little more than a fishing village on the East coast of Baja California off of the Sea of Cortez. Because of the great weather (the second driest climate in the world), foreigners have flocked to the little town. A large number of U.S. citizens and Europeans have purchased property (technically leased, as foreigners cannot own property within 30 miles of a coast in Mexico) and have moved to San Felipe. Some are retired, some are working in the growing economy, and others vacation here for weeks or months at a time.
